TAMPA, Fla. - Considering the strength of the NFC North this season, the Green Bay Packers couldn't afford to fall to 1-3 against a winless team starting a backup quarterback. And while it wasn't pretty, the Packers survived the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win 17-14 on Sunday. Jordan Love turned in his most efficient game of the season (aside from a fourth-quarter interception), completing 22 of 30 passes for 197 yards, two touchdowns and a 98.9 passer rating. More importantly, he was not sacked behind what's been a terrible offensive line. The Packers also rushed for 86 yards after entering the game last in the NFL in rushing offense (48.7 yards per game). Jalon Daniels, filling in for the injured Baker Mayfield, became the first NFL rookie quarterback to start a game this season. As anticipated, it was an up-and-down performance for the undrafted signal-caller out of Kansas. Daniels threw two first-half interceptions - the first to safety Evan Williams and the second to linebacker Edgerrin Cooper - but also led the Buccaneers (0-4) on a 12-play, 84-yard touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter to pull his team within 17-14. Tampa Bay had multiple chances to tie or take the lead after the Packers committed back-to-back red zone turnovers, but the Green Bay defense came up with stops on both occasions to seal the nail-biting victory. Despite the win, Green Bay lost one of its best defenders in Cooper, who was carted off with an Achilles injury early in the second half and quickly ruled out. Coach Matt LaFleur said after the game that he suspects Cooper will miss the rest of the season. Box score | Week 4 live blog | Game discussion How did the porous and injury-ravaged offensive line fare against the Buccaneers? On first glance, that appeared to be the offensive line's best game so far this season. There was a decent amount of quick-game stuff mixed in to mitigate the line's early-season struggles, but Love wasn't sacked and only absorbed two quarterback hits. Entering Week 4, Love had taken 31 hits, according to TruMedia, eight more than anyone else in the league. The Packers started Travis Glover at right guard after he missed all of last season and hadn't played yet this season, and they inserted newly signed Laken Tomlinson at left guard. Kevin Zeitler, 36, should further bolster the line at right guard next weekend against the Bears. He was inactive Sunday. Edgerrin Cooper is likely out for the season with an Achilles injury. What does the loss of Cooper mean for the Packers defense? Cooper, who was quickly ruled out after suffering an Achilles injury, is likely the Packers' second-best defensive player behind edge rusher Micah Parsons - even ahead of back-to-back All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney. Losing Cooper for the rest of the season is another significant blow to an already injury-ravaged Packers team. "I'm sick," Love said after the game. "He's such an impact player on our defense." Cooper, who has become one of the NFL's best linebackers, was off to a spectacular start this season and had a crucial interception late in the first half Sunday to go along with a sack. He was distraught after going down with what looked like a non-contact lower left leg injury, and LaFleur's announcement confirmed the worst outcome. The Packers will now look to special teams captain Isaiah McDuffie at linebacker to take his place. Meanwhile, Cooper joins right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele and wide receiver Jayden Reed as integral Packers to suffer season-ending injuries in the first four weeks. Was this a season-saving performance for the Packers? Or were they just facing an undrafted QB? It wasn't pretty, but 2-2 looks much better than 1-3. The Packers just have to tread water until they get their best player (Parsons) back in the next couple of weeks. They've done that so far, albeit in ugly fashion. You could argue the Packers should've won Sunday's game with more ease since they were facing an undrafted rookie backup quarterback in Daniels, but nothing comes easy for them these days. They were about to go up two scores in the fourth quarter when running back Kaleb Johnson lost a fumble on the Buccaneers' 1-yard line. Then, with another chance to go up two scores in the fourth quarter, Love threw a red-zone interception. See what I mean? In the end, Green Bay prevailed to avoid a DEFCON 5 scenario in Green Bay. For now, the Packers saved their season.
